FINALLY – People’s Bus Service Inaugurated in Karachi

A good news for people of Karachi who travelled by the local transport as the city of lights has finally gotten a proper state-of-the-art bus service. As per media details, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari inaugurated the much-awaited project.

Bus Routes

The bus has seven routes, however, only Route No. 1 is being launched today. A senior official of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) told media that the buses will start running on the Route No. 1 from Model Colony to Merewether Tower via Shahrah-e-Faisal and II Chundrigar Road. “The minimum fare of the bus would be Rs. 25 while the maximum would be Rs. 55,” the official stated.

The Route No. 1 has 38 stations spread across 29.5 kilometers, and 30 buses will operate on it from 7am to 12am. A total of 240 red colored hybrid air-conditioned buses have been precured from China for the service.

He also said that preparations are under way to start operation on the rest of the routes by August 14. The six other routes of People’s Bus Service are: 

    • North Karachi to Indus Hospital,
    • Korangi Nagan Chowrangi to Singer Chowrangi,
    • Korangi Inst Industrial Area, North Karachi to Dockyard
    • Surjani Town to PAF Base Masroor
    • Gulshan-e-Bihar, Orangi Town to Singer Chowrangi
    • Masomiyat to Baldia Town

Delays in the Project

At the inauguration ceremony, Sindh Minister for Labour & Human Resources, Saeed Ghani said that this project has faced many delays for many years. “We are now successful and I am very hopeful that people will start travelling in these buses,” Ghani said, adding that these are modern buses with very reasonable fare.

Moreover, the Sindh government has allocated a sum of Rs. 4 billion in its budget 2022-23 for getting more buses from China for People’s Bus Service.

This is the second good transport news for citizens of Karachi. The first one was the launch of mass transit Green Line bus service launch in January 2022.

    This service is indeed spread over a well-planned routes, I hope that these buses do not get damaged by people as has happened in the past. Moreover, the bus fare is also very low because currently old buses are charging at the least PKR 30 to
    PKR 40 for one stop.
