GAC Hytec SSR Proves EVs Can Drift — at 213.5 km/h!
Chinese automaker GAC Hytec has made history with its all-electric supercar, the SSR (formerly known as the Hyper SSR), officially setting a new world record for the fastest electric vehicle drift at 213.523 km/h, verified by Guinness World Records.
Professional driver Ye Zhicheng performed the record-breaking drift during a dedicated testing session. According to Guinness’s criteria, the vehicle must maintain a drift angle of at least 30° while exceeding 207 km/h over a minimum distance of 50 meters. The SSR not only met these standards, it exceeded them, surpassing the previous record of 207.996 km/h.
GAC Hytec SSR: Specs and Variants
The SSR is offered in three high-performance variants, each showcasing the brand’s engineering prowess:
- Standard: ¥1.286 million (~US $176,000)
- Ultimate: ¥1.386 million (~US $190,000)
- Track: ¥1.686 million (~US $231,000)
Powertrain:
A tri-motor system delivers over 900 kW of peak power, comprising:
- Front motor: 70 kW (peak 320 kW)
- Rear motors: 60 kW and 70 kW (peaks 260 kW and 320 kW)
Performance Highlights:
- 0–100 km/h in 1.9 seconds
- Top speed: 251 km/h
- Lateral acceleration: up to 1.7 g
Initially introduced under the Hyper sub-brand in 2022, the model was rebranded as Hytec in 2024.
Why This Record Matters
This milestone underscores how electric vehicles (EVs) are evolving beyond straight-line acceleration to excel in dynamic motorsport feats like drifting — a discipline long dominated by internal combustion engines.
For GAC Hytec, this record is more than a performance win; it’s a powerful brand statement that positions the company as a serious contender in the global high-performance EV market.
