In a bid to facilitate the motorists and lessen the complications pertaining to road accidents and better safety, the federal government is striving to bring a “Unified Traffic System” to the country.
The government has taken significant steps towards the implementation of a ‘Unified Traffic System’ by presenting three proposals to the respective provincial departments. These proposals encompass centralized driving licenses, commercial vehicle fitness assessment, and data sharing on driving licenses and traffic.
Moreover, following the process, provincial authorities have been urged to provide their feedback promptly, enabling the translation of the proposed system into reality.
Extensive research conducted by federal authorities analyzed traffic systems adopted by other countries, leading them to conclude that Pakistan should adopt a similar system. The primary objectives are to simplify procedures, facilitate motorists, and mitigate road accidents.
The Federal Ministry of Communications highlights the severe impact of road trauma on the national economy. Road traffic crashes cost approximately 3% of the GDP in Pakistan, resulting in an annual economic loss of up to $9 billion.
An official has stated, “The 18th Amendment enacted the devolution of responsibilities to the provinces. Individual province and territory governments have direct responsibility for most areas of road safety regulation and management. So, we have sought their coordination to introduce the Unified Traffic System in Pakistan.”
Furthermore, with an aim to avail a hassle-free drive b motorway, National Highways and Motorway Police have taken some steps to enhance traffic flow and reduce congestion. Starting from June 5th, 2023, strict legal action will be taken against vehicles without the M-Tag using the M-Tag Lane.
Penalties For M-Tag Violations
With the implementation of this new policy, vehicles without the M-Tag will no longer be permitted to use the M-Tag Lane on the motorway. Instead, they will be directed to the cash lane. This measure ensures a smoother journey for M-Tag users by reducing congestion and minimizing delays caused by non-M-Tag vehicles in the dedicated lanes.
