Assalam-o-Alaikum, Pakistan! My name is Suneel Munj, and I’m here today to give you an exclusive first look at one of the most exciting vehicles to hit the market: the Cannon. Joining me is Ali, and together, we’ll take you through the ins and outs of this impressive machine. Whether you’re an off-road enthusiast or seeking a robust, stylish pickup, the GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV is a vehicle that might grab your attention.

What’s in a Name?

This truck is known by several names around the world. It’s called the Poer Sahar in China, and internationally, it’s recognised as the GWM Cannon Alpha. In Pakistan, we’ll refer to it as the Cannon Alpha. This pickup is produced by Great Wall Motors (GWM), one of the largest manufacturers of double cabs in the Chinese market, which has been dominating the industry for over 27 years.

Engine & Power

The Cannon is equipped with a 2.0-litre turbocharged plug-in hybrid engine (PHEV), delivering an impressive 400 bhp and a massive 750 Nm of torque, mated with a 9-speed automatic hybrid transmission. These figures are enough to turn heads in the market, especially with the current competition that often falls short in terms of torque. This powertrain combination ensures the vehicle offers excellent towing capabilities and off-road prowess.

The diesel model of this car is no slouch either, boasting a solid performance, making this truck suitable for a variety of needs, including towing and off-roading.

The Plug-in Hybrid model supports both AC and DC charging. That means you can charge it at home or use a commercial DC fast charger. On pure EV mode, the range is around 110 km, and it can run at speeds up to 150 km/h in full EV before switching to hybrid.

Exterior

At first glance, the Cannon Alpha’s exterior is imposing and robust. The front reminds us of the classic Toyota Tundra design, with a large front mesh grille, sleek LED headlights, Daytime Running Lights (DRLs), fog lamps, and a dynamic bumper with a diffuser-style design and a skid plate. The 18-inch wheels will give it a sporty touch, while the body-colored overfenders make it look even more muscular. The side profile features body-colored handles, roof rails, and an elegant, clean design.

The Cannons body, wheel arches, and overall design make it look much more imposing. It’s designed to compete globally with other premium pickups.

At the rear, the car continues its bold theme. The tail lights are LED with dot-style internal elements, similar to those found in modern SUVs. They’re wide, clear, beautifully integrated, and arguably better looking than the front lamps.

The bed is spacious, offering practical utility without compromising on design. The tailgate features a split-opening mechanism with multiple functional options. You can open it via a button press—and yes, it’s available with a soft-opening hydraulic system, too.

A standard tow hook (tow bar) is also fitted, while the rear bumper is body-colored, giving it a premium look. Parking sensors and a 540-degree camera system ensure that even reversing this big boy is a breeze.

Off-Road Capabilities

When it comes to off-roading, the Cannon shines with its 4×4 drivetrain. It has three difflocks, making it suitable for rugged terrains, and it also features a high clearance design that enhances its off-road capabilities. The Hi4T badge means this vehicle is a full-time 4WD machine, equipped with an off-road-ready suspension system, ready for any challenge that comes its way.

Interior

Inside, the Cannon offers a premium experience. It features electrically adjustable, heated, and ventilated seats, a wireless charger, and ambient lighting that sets the mood. The front seats are exceptionally comfortable, with memory seat functions and a massage feature for added luxury. The 10-way power-adjustable seats ensure that you find the perfect driving position.

Rear passengers are treated equally well, with reclining seatbacks, heated and ventilated seats, a welcoming entry system, a wireless charger, and full-size door openings. Even the roof lining feels premium, giving you SUV-level comfort. One standout feature is the large sunroof, which adds a touch of openness to the cabin.

Infotainment & Features

The cabin houses two large displays—a 14.6-inch multi-touch screen and a 12.3-inch full digital instrument cluster. It supports wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, and includes:

  • EV / HV / Intelligent drive modes

  • Auto climate control (dual zone)

  • Cool box between the seats

  • Touch-sensitive reading lights

  • Head-up display (HUD)

Advanced Safety Features

Safety is a top priority with the Cannon, which comes equipped with an array of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), including:

  • 7 airbags
  • Front collision warning
  • Emergency braking
  • Lane keep assist
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Front cross-traffic alert
  • Multiple drive modes (Eco, Normal, Sport, 4H and 4L)

Expected Launch in Pakistan

The car will be launched in Pakistan once the construction of GWM’s new plant, which is currently underway, is complete. Once the plant is ready, expect a local launch in the near future, possibly within this year.

Final Thoughts

The Cannon Alpha is a serious contender in the pickup truck market. Its powerful hybrid engine, rugged off-road capabilities, luxurious interior, and cutting-edge tech offer a complete package for buyers looking for something more than just a regular pickup. Whether you’re tackling tough terrains or cruising through the city, this truck is built for every challenge.
