With such high prices of electricity in Pakistan 🇵🇰 vis a vis its availability issues, such vehicles are to be bought with great thinking process.
@Captain
I fully agree with your logic.
Here is a very relevant article which makes a lot of very important things clear:
*https://thedriven.io/2023/07/14/price-of-mg4-electric-hatchback-slashed-in-its-home-market-to-less-than-a25000/
The price of the MG4 has recently been slashed in China. This applies to all. The price of the MG4 has also reduced in Australia as well. A country where the MG4 is a CBU import just like Pakistan.
The price of MG4 Excite 51kWh in China = 115,800 RMB = 47 lac 23 thousand PKR
The Price of MG4 Excite 51kWh in Aus. = Aus. $38,999 = 74 lac 56 thousand PKR
The Price of MG4 Excite 51kWh in Pak. = 1 caror 10 lacs (excluding freight and WHT)
Price of MG4 Essence 64kWh in China = – (sorry. Couldn’t get the exact price)
Price of MG4 Essence 64kWh in Aus. = Aus. $47,990 = 91 lac 76 thousand PKR
Price of MG4 Essence 64kWh in Pak. = 1 caror 30 lacs (excluding freight and WHT)
The MG4 is a CBU import in Australia same as Pakistan. Yet the price disparity is comical.
We import the MG4 directly from China just like Australia. The market (sale) price for the Excite, for example, is RMB 115,800 (47 lac 23 thousand PKR) in China. MG Pakistan will be getting the MG4 at a company/dealer discount which would be lower. The price of the Excite in Pakistan is over 1 caror. What are we paying the extra 60 lac (or 70 lac) PKR for?
This shows that the EV policy in Pakistan needs to be seriously updated. When the policy was made, just a few years back, the average battery size in small EVs was around 30kWh or so; much less than 50kWh. Now, the MG4 EV clearly demonstrates the breakneck speed of advancement in the EV space and the fact that EV batteries are, in fact, getting cheaper to make, thus, now we have small family hatchbacks with over 50kWh of batteries fitted to them as standard. Our EV policy only gives incentives on battery of up to 50kWh. Anything over and the taxes become more like tax bombs; charged at full rates. This one point is affectively killing EV adoption in Pakistan. Look at the price disparity between us and the rest.
On another article here on PW, it is clearly said that the current fuel reserves in Pakistan will be depleted in 15 years. That is an alarmingly short time. This means new exploration for new fuel sources must be undertaken honestly and Pakistan also needs to seriously transition to new energy vehicles to survive. Otherwise, the fuel bills alone will gut our country.
EVs need to be incentivized. In all other nations, EV adoption is incentivized with incentives for the buyer. In Pakistan we have a seriously outdated EV policy that makes even a very affordable small and capable EV into a play toy for the rich only. The companies also have to realize, the only way they can increase their EV sales is if they don’t take advantage and keep extreme profit margins. EVs are no longer “premium for the rich only” anymore. They are becoming mainstream. The only question is, what are the sleeping leaders and policy makers and the businessmen of our country willing to do. Go down with the companies that WILL be left behind or move with the times and seriously adopt EVs.
A quick side note; hybrids should have been adopted ages ago. But even such an old technology is considered as very premium by our local big assemblers. The sad fact is that recently we have had the first hybrid motorbike in the local market. If even 70cc bikes can now be hybrid, you know that hybrid tech is quickly becoming the Mehran of the auto tech world and its adoption should have been done ages ago. Move with the times or forever remain irrelevant.
