In a bid to promote road safety and enforce strict adherence to traffic regulations, the National Highways & Motorways Police (NHMP) has announced a substantial increase in fines for various rule violations. Effective January 1, the enhanced fines aim to deter reckless driving behaviors and ensure safer roads for all.
One notable change comes in the form of increased penalties for using High-Intensity Discharge (HID) lights on roads under the jurisdiction of the NHMP. Previously set at Rs. 300, the fine has surged to Rs. 2,000, reflecting a staggering increase of Rs. 1,700.
This move emphasizes the authorities’ commitment to cracking down on practices that can compromise road safety, particularly concerning the use of blinding headlights.
Hefty Fines
Motorcyclists engaging in dangerous activities, such as performing stunts, will now face a hefty fine of Rs. 5,000, a significant jump from the previous Rs. 300 penalty. Similarly, the fine for driving without a helmet has been increased to Rs. 1,000, up from Rs. 200, underscoring the importance of protective gear for two-wheeler riders.
Passenger vehicles exceeding the prescribed passenger limit will incur a higher penalty of Rs. 5,000, compared to the previous Rs. 1,500 fine. This stern approach aims to discourage overcrowded vehicles, which can pose serious risks to both passengers and other road users.
The fines for over-speeding have also witnessed an uptick, with motorcycles facing a Rs. 1,500 penalty, cars at Rs. 2,500, passenger vehicles at Rs. 10,000, and Heavy Transport Vehicles (HTVs) at Rs. 5,000.
These increased fines send a strong message to all road users about the consequences of violating speed limits, emphasizing the NHMP’s commitment to reducing accidents and ensuring a safer road environment.
