Number Plate Sets New World Record at Dubai Auction
Dubai is known for its extravagant lifestyle and luxurious possessions, and the recent auction of a car number plate has set a new world record. The number plate P7 was auctioned off for a staggering AED 55 million, equivalent to Rs. 4.25 billion. This is an incredible amount that can buy 27 brand-new Toyota Land Cruisers in Pakistan.
The auction took place at the ‘Most Noble Numbers’ auction held at the Four Seasons Resort in Jumeirah. The bidding war among the guests resulted in a new world record being set, surpassing the previous one set 16 years ago in Abu Dhabi, where a number plate was sold for AED 52.5 million.
The bidding for the P7 number plate began at AED 15 million and quickly rose to over AED 30 million. The offer was momentarily paused at AED 35 million after Pavel Valeryevich Durov, the French-Emirati businessman and the founder of the messaging app, Telegram, placed the bid. The auction then became fiercely competitive, and bids continued to flood in from many bidders, resulting in a thrilling environment.
Finally, the winning bid of AED 55 million was secured by an anonymous bidder, identified as Bid Panel 7, amidst loud applause from the crowd. The host of the evening had questioned whether a new world record would be set, and the answer was a resounding “yes.”
