LAHORE — The Punjab Excise and Taxation Department is working on a new number plate format specifically for SUVs and large vehicles. The proposal, currently under review, aims to improve visibility and address enforcement issues caused by standard plates on oversized vehicles.
Current number plates in Punjab are designed for smaller cars, making them hard to read on larger vehicles like SUVs. Law enforcement agencies and Safe City surveillance systems often struggle to identify these plates due to their size and placement.
To fix this, the department plans to introduce a redesigned number plate with:
- A larger surface area tailored for SUVs
- A distinct color scheme replacing the standard black-on-white format
- Enhanced security features to prevent duplication and tampering

While no rollout date has been confirmed, officials say the new plates will be introduced once regulatory approvals are in place. It remains unclear whether existing SUV owners will be required to replace their plates or if the change will apply only to new registrations.
Vehicle owners may need to bear additional costs for the new plates, including potential modifications to plate brackets if dimensions are altered.
