Sindh Becomes The First Province To Start EV Registrations
Great news for EV owners in Sindh, electric vehicles can now be registered in the province. Earlier, EV registrations were only available in the capital city Islamabad. The Government of Sindh has taken the initiative for EV owners, so they don’t have to travel across the country to get their cars registered in Islamabad.
Sindh Excise Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla broke the news on Tuesday and announced that the registration of electric vehicles and motorcycles has started.
EVs are the way to go!
Electric vehicles are the future, period. EVs are taking over the world, and Pakistan is no exception. The government of Pakistan is on a mission to increase electric passenger vehicles to 30% by 2030.
The federal government announced the Auto Policy (2021-2026) in July. The new policy included multiple benefits and perks for electric vehicles. The biggest benefit was the reduction of Customs Duty from 25% to 10% on CBU units for one year. The Customs Duty on the import of EV parts was also reduced to 1%.
Soon after the introduction of the new auto policy, Prime Minister Imran Khan launched Pakistan’s first-ever electric bike. The e-bike can travel up to 80 kilometers in Eco mode and 60 kilometers in Turbo mode. On top of everything, it only costs Rs. 82,500.
The Sindh Government was also the first to launch an electric bus in the country. Back in March, Sindh Transport Minister, Syed Awais Qadir Shah, inaugurated the first electric bus in Karachi and promised to add a fleet of 100 more e-buses in the near future. EV registrations in Sindh is another step in the right direction.
Shout out to the government of Sindh for pushing forward in the EV race. We hope that other provincial governments follow Sindh’s lead to promote EV technology in Pakistan.
