BYD’s Yangwang U9 Xtreme Becomes Fastest Electric Hypercar at Nürburgring
The Yangwang U9 Xtreme, a flagship model from Yangwang, BYD’s premium luxury sub-brand, has officially made history by setting a new lap-time record for electric super-sports cars at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit. According to Yangwang, the U9 Xtreme completed the 20.832-kilometre “Green Hell” loop in 6 mins 59.157 secs, becoming the first electric sports car to break the seven-minute barrier in its class.
This milestone follows another remarkable achievement: just a month earlier, the U9 Xtreme reached a verified top speed of 496.22 kilometres per hour at ATP Papenburg, cementing its place among the world’s fastest electric vehicles.
Power, Technology, and Precision Engineering
Built on Yangwang’s 1200-volt ultra-high-voltage platform, the U9 Xtreme is powered by four electric motors, each capable of spinning up to 30,000 revolutions per minute. Together, they produce more than 2,959 horsepower, delivering an impressive 1,200 horsepower per tonne power-to-weight ratio. The car integrates Yangwang’s e⁴ Platform and the DiSus-X intelligent body-control system, enhancing power distribution, suspension response, and stability during high-speed manoeuvres. For the Nürburgring run, the U9 Xtreme was equipped with a redesigned liquid-cooling system, a titanium-alloy carbon-ceramic braking system, and GitiSport e·GTR² PRO tyres to maximise grip and control. After over a year of development and rigorous testing, the record lap was achieved on 22 August 2025, setting a new benchmark for electric hypercar performance.
A Defining Moment for Electric Performance
Limited to only 30 units worldwide, the Yangwang U9 Xtreme is more than a hypercar, it is a technological statement from BYD’s premium division. By cutting over five seconds off the previous electric supercar record, the U9 Xtreme proves that electric vehicles can outperform traditional combustion-engine models. This achievement marks a pivotal moment in global automotive history, positioning Chinese innovation at the forefront of high-performance engineering.
The Future of Hypercars Is Electric
The Yangwang U9 Xtreme’s record-breaking success at the Nürburgring sends a clear message: the future of speed is electric. With its breathtaking acceleration, aerodynamic precision, and cutting-edge battery technology, the U9 Xtreme redefines the limits of electric performance. It embodies the perfect harmony of power, intelligence, and sustainability, symbolising the dawn of a new era for all-electric high-performance vehicles.
