Here is your 16th generation  Hybrid Toyota Crown, revealed a short while ago. The major update is that now the Crown comprises a set of 4 models, in other words, 4 variants are now available under this badge.

Four Variants of Toyota Crown

Let us discuss all 4 versions/ body styles of the car. First, a high riding lifted sedan looking like Crossover; second, a more conventional Sporty Crossover; third, a standard conventional sedan; and finally, a crossover station wagon/ Estate. However, Toyota hasn’t revealed details on the three of these versions. Also, it is unclear if every market will get all four body styles.

However, for the first time ever, the new models will be available in almost 40 countries across the globe. All these vehicles are based on Toyota’s New Global Architecture / TNGA. Pertinently, Crown was available in the USA but was discontinued in 1972.

What is New?

The new Crown lineup models will use new technology like “Laser Screw Welding (LSW),” new structural adhesives for improved rigidity resulting in upscale driving dynamics. The high riding lifted model is 194-inch long, 72.4-inch wide, and has a wheelbase of 112.2-inch.

This makes it slightly smaller than the famous full-size sedan Toyota Avalon which was discontinued in North America earlier this year. The new lifted Crown can be called mid-sized as far as a footprint and North American sizing chart is concerned.

Power

As for power, this time, it will be Hybrid only. The models will be available with a standard 2.5L naturally aspirated Hybrid engine making 230hp (confirmation awaited). This engine is coupled with two electric motors and has an ECVT transmission.

The other engine option is an all-new 2.4L Hybrid / T24A-FTS for the top Platinum variant. This is a 4-cylinder Turbo engine with a dual boost hybrid system. This model has a single electric motor in front to maximize torque. Furthermore, a 6-speed conventional transmission is standard instead of ECVT, typically seen with Toyota Hybrid vehicles. This engine + motor hybrid setup will make approximately 340hp. Meanwhile, AWD is also an option for both engine versions.

Drive Modes

This is an on-demand system with an electric motor on the rear axle, and Toyota calls it “E-FOUR.” Depending on the variant, driving modes like Eco, Normal, and Sport are available, although the top variant gets Custom as well as Sport+.

Interior Design Language

The interior has an all-new design language, giving a premium feel and looks. There is a 12.3-inch digital cluster, while a 12.3-inch infotainment screen capable of cell phone integration and 4G Wi-Fi connectivity is also offered. The company is also offering JBL 11 speaker system. Then there is a fixed panoramic roof, dual-zone climate control, premium leather, power driver, and passenger seats. And the base model gets fabric seating surfaces.

While the rear is okay, it is going well with the name fastback crossover, however, the front is absolutely clashing in with the aura that the name Crown commands, it is hideous looking like 10th generation Civic, whereas original fans of Crown had always liked its stately looks. Perhaps this Crown is aimed at attracting younger generation whose tastes are funkier.
