In a recent piece of news, it has come to light that Pakistan’s automobile import landscape is witnessing a significant shift as the CBUs imported comprise only of luxury vehicles. While essential vehicle imports have been banned, luxury car imports are on the rise.
CBUs Imported in August 2023
The month of August 2023 saw the import of nearly 3,100 Completely Built-Up (CBU) cars into Pakistan. The CBUs imported include various makes and models, but some notable names stand out.
– Luxury Land Cruisers and Prados: Approximately 195 Land Cruisers and Prados made their way into the country.
– Hybrid Vehicles: Over 250 hybrid cars with various engine sizes were imported. Hybrids are gaining popularity for their fuel efficiency and eco-friendliness.
– Electric Vehicles (EVs): Nearly 97 EVs hit Pakistani shores in August. This category included prestigious names like the BMW iX, Mercedes EQS, and Audi Etron. The shift towards electric mobility is undeniable.
– Engine Capacities: Of these imports, 1,571 cars were 660cc vehicles, while 587 were 1000cc. Smaller engine capacities remain dominant.

Luxury Over Essentials
What raises eyebrows is the decline in essential vehicle imports due to the ban. While luxury cars find their way into Pakistan, the imports of basic and necessary vehicles seem to be decreasing. This trend is a cause for concern as it reflects a growing disparity in the country’s automotive market.

Amidst the influx of luxury vehicles, the absence of essential and affordable cars is noticeable. This discrepancy raises questions about the availability of budget-friendly options for Pakistani consumers. It also raises questions as to whose needs are being catered to by importing these luxury vehicles.
The changing landscape of car imports in Pakistan signifies a shift in consumer preferences towards luxury, hybrid, and electric vehicles. It also reflects government policies and their impact on the different segments of the public. While these choices offer advanced technology and environmental benefits, it’s crucial not to lose sight of providing affordable and essential transportation options for all.
