Bike Safety Features That Should Exist in Pakistan
In Pakistan, we’re still living in the 1980s era. While the world is getting traction and stability control in its motorcycles, we’re impressed if the brand gives us disc brakes and a self-start motor. We have three big brands that are running a monopoly in Pakistan: they increase the price every six months and change the stickers to indicate model upgrades. This has been the strategy of Yamaha, Atlas, and Suzuki since 1999.
Some Chinese brands, such as United, New Asia, Yadea, and Evee, are trying to break this monopoly by launching EV scooters with packed essential goodies and a price tag under 300k.
Therefore, here are some essential safety features that you should consider if you’re buying a scooter from a Chinese brand like Yadea, United, and so on. You know, expecting modern features from the other Big3 (Yamaha, Atlas, and Suzuki) is impossible because these three companies live in the 1980s era.
Disc Brakes in Front
Front disc brakes are a huge safety feature and improve stopping power and control during emergency braking situations. Unlike the traditional drum brakes of Honda, which fade under stress, disc brakes maintain performance, especially in wet conditions. For any motorcycle, particularly in a traffic-heavy country like Pakistan, front disc brakes should be non-negotiable.
Alloy Rims
Alloy rims are more than just a cosmetic upgrade; they are much better than Suzuki and Honda’s steel rims. They are lighter, more durable, and more resistant to rust than conventional steel rims. Their reduced weight improves handling and stability, making the ride safer and more comfortable. Plus, their ability to withstand harsh road conditions makes them ideal for Pakistan’s unpredictable terrain.
Self-Start
Gone are the days when kick-starting a bike was the only option, excluding the Atlas, which still offers the same typical 80s-style kickstarting technology. Self-start mechanisms add convenience and reliability, especially during cold mornings or in situations requiring a quick restart. This feature is increasingly common in modern motorcycles, but it remains a rarity in many budget-friendly options.
CVT Transmission (in Petrol Versions)
Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) in petrol scooters ease the riding experience by eliminating manual gear shifts. This not only enhances rider comfort but also minimizes distractions, allowing the rider to focus on road safety. While CVT is more common in scooters, its inclusion in motorcycles would be a game-changer for urban commuters.
Comfortable Ride Quality
Comfort is a safety feature often overlooked. A well-cushioned seat, ergonomic handlebars, and effective suspension systems are essential for reducing rider fatigue. Longer rides on poorly designed bikes can lead to discomfort, increasing the likelihood of accidents. Investing in motorcycles with ride comfort as a priority ensures safer journeys.
LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs)
LED DRLs enhance visibility, making motorcycles easier to spot in low-light or foggy conditions. Unlike halogen bulbs, LEDs consume less power and last longer, reducing maintenance costs. Given Pakistan’s often chaotic traffic, improved visibility can significantly lower accident risks.
Good Build Quality
A motorcycle’s structural integrity is fundamental to safety. From the frame to the fuel tank, every component should be durable and designed to withstand impacts. Chinese brands like Yadea and Evee have made strides in offering solid build quality at competitive prices, giving riders a safer alternative to the legacy players in the market.
