Distracted Driving – One Text or Call Could Wreck It All

90

History of accidents go as far as  the invention of the automobiles. Since the arrival of smart phones/cell phones and other electronic gadgetry, the level of distraction and its impact on road safety have increased tenfolds. Distracted driving is not caused just by using cell phones, there are various other activities like eating, drinking, adjusting radio, looking for something in dash board, etc. that cause distracted driving. Watching movies with in dash DVD players which are now very common is one of the serious distraction issues as well. I am astonished to see that many people still want to have a DVD player in their car dash even after knowing the dangers.

Use of cell phones, texting, browsing the internet and social media are the most common causes of distracted driving. I am sure everyone will agree that we see many people using cellphones while driving on a daily basis. Texting is the most alarming cause of distracted driving because it involves manual and cognitive distractions simultaneously.

You will be surprised to know that many studies have proved that sending or receiving a text takes a driver’s eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, which means that at 85 kph, the vehicle will cover the length of an entire football field, completely BLIND.

Recently I came across this video which is now about a year old. The video shows that  a mom is driving a car and filming her kids in the back seat. Everything is going normal and all of sudden the car bangs with something and car fills up with smoke. Fortunately, everyone remained safe according to the video. But it will not be a case always and one can land in much different and unfortunate events.

Watch this video and decide yourself if you want to be in a similar situation, specially with your kids on-board. Remember the kids in the video are in car seat which is not common in Pakistan at all.
