Karachi: Parking Spaces Are Now Free for Everyone
In a move aimed at easing the financial burden on Karachi’s residents, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has announced that it will no longer charge fees at its parking sites. The decision, revealed by Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, comes as part of KMC’s commitment to prioritizing public welfare. “No fee will be collected at Karachi’s parking palces,” he stated, explaining that the measure was taken in the public interest.

The mayor also highlighted that KMC’s finances have seen a significant improvement, with over Rs 2 billion now in its coffers, and more expected. “KMC does not need to rely on Rs. 40 to 50 million from parking fees,” Wahab emphasized.
As part of the new initiative, an official notification will soon be issued to ensure the public is aware of the changes. Additionally, legal action will be taken against anyone attempting to illegally collect fees under KMC’s name.
This move will impact 46 of Karachi’s main roads, where parking fees will be eliminated, offering much-needed relief to citizens. However, fees will still be applicable in some areas, including 25 towns and six cantonment board regions, as KMC works to balance public convenience with financial needs.
While this parking initiative is a positive step, it comes alongside other recent traffic-related changes in the city. To reduce traffic accidents, the Sindh government has introduced a ban on dumpers during daytime hours.
These vehicles will now be allowed to operate only between 11 PM and 6 AM. This decision follows a high-level meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah, aimed at addressing rising concerns over road safety.
These developments show a growing awareness of the city’s traffic problems and a dedication to improving life for Karachi’s residents. With KMC’s stable financial situation, the focus on public welfare seems stronger than ever.
