Lahore Bans Helmetless Riders on Major Roads

These days, Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz is leaving no stone unturned to make the roads safe for travelers. From producing relief for drivers with expired licenses to using artificial intelligence (AI) to curb traffic violations, the Punjab government is using all sources to force motorcycle riders and motorists to adhere to the traffic rules.

In a recent event, model roads in Lahore are specified as Helmet-Only zones. According to the spokesman for the traffic police, motorcyclists with no helmets cannot travel on these major roads including jail Road, Mall Road, Ferozepur Road, Canal Roads and Maulana Shaukat Ali Road. Moreover, routes in Cantt are also designated as no-go areas for helmetless riders.

Chief Traffic Officer Ammara Athar has directed to take strict against the individuals committing helmet violations. For this purpose, the authorities have introduced an AI system which will work alongside manual action. As per the reports, AI system detected 202,957 violations whilst manual action led to 249,684 challans.

AI Based E-Challans

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz recently took to social media to reveal that the provincial government has begun utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) to curb traffic violations. In her post, she stated: “The Punjab government has introduced AI-based e-challans. This marks a step toward a technologically advanced Punjab, leveraging technology to improve and enhance governance.”

Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Ammara Athar has stated that cameras are also being utilized to monitor traffic wardens, promoting discipline and ensuring safe travel through modern technology. “For the first time in South Asia, an AI system is being deployed to issue e-challans for a comprehensive list of 19 traffic violations,” CTO Athar highlighted.

To further digitalize the traffic management and challan system, the Punjab government has launched several initiatives, including e-challans and e-vehicle registrations.
