Mercedes‑Benz has showcased an exciting breakthrough in its R&D: a photovoltaic “solar paint” capable of converting an entire vehicle’s body into a solar array to charge the batteries of the vehicles. At first glance, it sounds like sci-fi movie story, but Mercedes says it’s developing a new kind of paint that turns the whole car body into a solar panel and Mercedes calls it “Solar Paint”.

What It Is & How It Works

The solar paint starts from an upper layer just 5 micrometers  thick—thinner than a human hair—and it’s so light that it weighs about 50 grams per square meter. Beneath that layer, there’s a photovoltaic layer that generates the energy from the sun. The upper nanoparticle layer is so thin that Mercedes claims it allows 94% of sunlight to pass through, enabling a solar-to-electricity conversion efficiency of up to 20%—comparable to standard rooftop solar panels.

When applied across exterior panels of a mid‑size SUV, it yields roughly 118 square feet of solar surface—nearly quadruple the coverage of a typical flexible roof-mounted panel .

Real‑World Potential

Estimates indicate that in sunny regions like Los Angeles, the system could generate enough electricity to support a mid‑sized EV’s annual mileage—up to 20,000 km  and in Beijing, it does around 14,000 km/year.

Engineers note the need to galvanically isolate each panel and wire it into the vehicle’s power-conversion system so that generated electricity can flow to the battery or motors .

Sustainability Benefits

The solar paint formulation excludes rare earths and silicon, relying instead on non‑toxic, readily available raw materials. It’s recyclable and lower cost than traditional solar modules .

While experts hail the innovation as “very promising,” they caution about unresolved challenges—particularly around durability, stability, and performance across different climates .
