The Punjab government intends to move Orange Line Metro Train (OLMT) to solar energy to save utility costs and protect the climate.

Punjab Mass Transit Authority (PMTA) General Manager (Operation), Ozair Shah, let the media know that moving OLMT to environmentally friendly power is the main reasonable solution in the midst of increasing electricity prices. He added that the transition could assist the government with saving Rs. 1.9 billion.

The government is thinking about different designs to move OLMT to solar power, told Ozair. The division is, as of now, gauging the upsides and downsides of each arrangement to execute the most reasonable transition methodology, he added.

“One of the plans is to build a solar plant with capacity of 50MW or 70MW. The solar plant will activate a mechanism of input to output through WeLink to power up OLMT instead of using traditional electricity apparatus.”

Chinese project worker CR-Norinco — a joint venture between China State Railway Group (CR) and China North Industries Corporation (Norinco) — prepared OLMT according to a Built Operate Transfer (BOT) working model. At first, CR-Norinco and PMTA co-worked the project, but in 2020, PMTA took total charge of OLMT.

Its track traverses 27.1 kilometers and comprises of 26 stations. As per subtleties, 27 trains navigate the track, taking special care of 245,000 travelers day to day. That’s what PMTA asserted. Since the assembly of OLMT, its absolute traveler count has surpassed 20 million.

The authority presently tries to extend the help while guaranteeing a supportable life saver as solar power.
