When we say the word Hybrid and have to pinpoint any benchmark model, only one name comes to mind “THE PRIUS.” Toyota Prius was the world’s first mass-marketed hybrid when it was released in Japan in December of 1997 as the first generation, and since then, it’s been the best-selling hybrid model around the globe.

Current Toyota Prius

Yes, as far as the exterior is concerned, it is very subjective, and there is no doubt that there are always many positive and negative thoughts. You will always find a joke/meme about the Toyota Prius on social media, but its a fact that Prius sells well, and it does the job for which it is designed: fuel economy.

By the way, just a random piece of automotive trivia, when the first Prius prototype was made, Toyota engineers couldn’t move the car for 49 days; today, millions of Prius are running on the road.

The current generation of Prius is the 4th /XW50, and it arrived in 2014 and went through a facelift in 2020. Now it’s time for the next 5th-generation Prius, and we have been hearing news about it on and off. A prototype camouflaged vehicle was also seen a few months ago in Japan and was reported as the upcoming Prius. However, today Toyota Japan have released some teaser images with no details, although with the message “HYBRID REBORN.”

The Teaser

It is expected and predicted that this might be the next Prius. As for the exterior, not much can be extracted from teasers, but it seems that it got some inspiration from Toyota “bZ” electric model range, especially the front. Toyota mentioned that the new Prius would retain its Hybrid DNA but stated it would be “in a new direction.”

From the side profile shadow image, we can see a sportier-looking sports-back type styling. Next, Prius will be based on a new E3 platform, an updated GA-C global platform that also incorporates the Toyota EV platform. Expect an improved wheelbase and obviously increased interior volumes, and overall will be more aerodynamically efficient, possibly wider, lower, and sportier.

Expected Power

Only a little is known as far as technical, but it is expected that it might carry over the current 1.8L Hybrid 2ZR-FXE engine, and possibly for the first time, we will get a 2.0L M20A-FXS Hybrid version in Prius. Like the current 4th generation Prius, an AWD-e, an electric motor-based all-wheel drive system is also possible. Like always, we can expect a regular conventional Hybrid, Plugin Hybrid, while some reports suggest we might also see a hydrogen-powered fuel cell version.

Toyota has not revealed the name of the upcoming model as teased, but the current Prius has completed its life cycle, so there are more chances we will see the new model. More details will be available on November 16th.

Stay Tuned for Updates.

It is not designed for fuel economy, but to reduce air pollution. Fuel economy is among the gain with hybrid technology.
