Toyota Yaris GLi CVT vs. Toyota Corolla XLi Auto: A brief comparison!

Toyota Yaris is being introduced in a total of six variants that includes the 1.3-liter and 1.5-liter versions. Since the sedan is replacing iconic Corolla 1.3L variants, it will be facing stiff competition in the market. To fill the shoes of Corolla, it will take some serious impact on the loyal customers of IMC.

However, we will be discussing the features offered in Toyota Yaris GLi 1.3L (1329 cc) CVT and compare them to the outgoing Toyota Corolla XLi auto 1.3L (1299 cc) Auto. Let’s have a look!

Power and Transmission:

Under the hood, Toyota Yaris has a 4-cylinder in-line 16-valve DOHC with dual VVT-I 1329 cc 1NR-FE engine with sequential multi-port fuel injection (SFI) system. It can generate a maximum output power of 98 hp at 6000 rpm and a maximum torque of 123 Nm at 4200 rpm. It’s paired to a 7-speed CVT / Sport Shiftmatic System.

On the other hand, Toyota Corolla XLi 1.3-litre Auto is powered by a water-cooled 4-cylinder in-line 16-valve DOHC with VVT-I 2NZ-FE 1299 cc engine with sequential multi-port fuel injection (SFI) system. It produces a maximum output power of 84 hp at 6000 rpm and a maximum torque of 121 Nm at 4400 rpm. Corolla XLi Auto is mated to a 4-speed automatic (super electronic controlled transmission).

Braking & Suspension:

Toyota Yaris is incorporated with ventilated disc brakes at the front wheels and drum brakes at the rear side. For an enhanced braking experience, the automaker has also provided a Brake Assist (BA) system. The front suspension of Yaris GLi CVT is equipped with Mac Pherson Strut, whereas the rear suspension has a torsion beam.

Toyota Corolla XLi Auto, on the other hand, has ventilated disc brakes at the front and solid disc brakes at the rear wheels. The suspension of Toyota Corolla, however, is similar to the all-new Yaris.

Dimensions & Capacity:

The length and width of the Toyota Yaris are 4425 mm and 1730 mm, respectively. In terms of height, the car is 1475 mm tall. The wheelbase and minimum turning radius of the Toyota Yaris is 2550 mm and 5.1 meter. The luggage compartment has a capacity of 476 liters whereas it comes with a fuel tank with up to 42 liters of fuel capacity.

In comparison to this, Toyota Corolla XLi Auto has a length of 4620 mm while its width and height are 1775 mm and 1475 mm, respectively. The wheelbase and minimum turning radius of the car is 2700 mm and 5.4 meter respectively. It has a luggage compartment capacity of 470 liters and has a comparatively larger 55-liter fuel tank.

Exterior:

Toyota Yaris is stylish and elegant in its outlook and resembles Corolla in many ways. At the front side, it has a 4-beam halogen lamp headlight while the daytime running lamp is missing in this particular variant. It has a pigmented front radiator grille. There are no fog lamps in this variant of Yaris. It has body-colored outside door handles, and side-view mirrors with integrated side turn signals. The windshield has a green lamination, and the front windscreen has intermittent wipers. On the rear side, there is a short pole antenna. Underneath it, there is a rear chrome garnish between the rear combination lamps. For an elegant appearance, the automaker has provided with LED line guide in the rear lamps and a reflex reflector at the bottom end of the rear bumper. The standard tire size offered by the company is 185/60 R15, with steel wheels with full wheel caps.

The 1.3-litre XLi CVT model of Toyota Corolla comes with a partial chrome front radiator grille with halogen headlamps.  The sedan resembles Yaris in terms of its design language and aesthetics. It also didn’t have any DRL’s or fog lamps in this particular variant. However, the outside door handles are body-colored along with colored side-view mirrors with integrated turn signals. The windshield of Corolla is laminated and has intermittent windshield wipers. It has a glass embedded antenna and provided with a chrome rear garnish. The standard tire size in Corolla XLi is 195/65 R15, with steel wheels having full wheel caps.

Interior:

Toyota Yaris is built with an incredible interior design that also offers a spacious cabin. The company has also provided various comfort and convenience features for the customers in the all-new Yaris. It comes under ivory-colored fabric seats that fit in perfectly with the dual-tone interior of the car. The other salient features in the interior of Yaris are as mentioned below:

The automaker has provided with an in-dash Touch Audio System with three lines LCD display. It also offers a connectivity feature of advanced Bluetooth that includes two phones, hands-free, and seamless music streaming for up to 5 phones. It also has a USB and AUX connectivity feature along with MP3, CD player, and Radio. There are just two speakers provided by the auto manufacturer.

Toyota Corolla comes with a basic in-dash audio system that offers MP3, Radio, USB, and AUX connectivity with two speakers installed by the company in the front doors only.

Price:

In terms of price, the two cars are available at the following ex-prices:

  • Toyota Yaris GLi 1.3 CVT PKR 2,519,000/- (introductory price)
  • Toyota Corolla XLi 1.3 Auto PKR 2,619,000/-

The all-new Yaris costs PKR 100,000 less than the outgoing XLi Auto version, which is good news for the loyal customers of the automaker. However, it’s up to the general public to access the features of both sedans and decide which one is better. Undoubtedly, there are a lot of expectations linked to Yaris in the local market, but only time will decide if it will be able to fill in the big shoes of Corolla in Pakistan. The 1.3-liter variants of Corolla have enjoyed huge success in the auto sector of Pakistan for many years. Therefore, it will be interesting to see how the highly-anticipated car turns out for the consumers.
