Uber downgrades Suzuki Cultus to Mini category


Uber has recently downgraded some of its Suzuki Cultus drivers from Go to Mini category. These drivers have claimed that their profits have been limited significantly by this sudden decision.

As we all know, ride-hailing app Uber has five categories: Uber X, Uber Go, Uber Mini, Uber Auto, Uber Moto. The latter two are for rickshaw and bike services, respectively. Uber drivers across the country have voiced their concerns in this regard.

Uber drivers were conveyed through a message last week that all Suzuki Cultus drivers, except for those with 2017 model or above, have been shifted to Uber Mini category. The reason for this shift remained undisclosed in the message. It is worth mentioning that drivers of new Cultus, 2017 model or above, have not been downgraded.

On its website, Uber has categorized Suzuki Mehran, Daihatsu Cuore and Suzuki Alto in Mini category. The basic requirement of Uber Mini is “cost-efficient means of traveling for riders” while the car must be a 2001 model or above.

On the other hand, the newer models of Suzuki Swift, Suzuki Wagon R and Suzuki Cultus and Suzuki Every are present in Uber Go category. According to the ride-hailing website, Uber Go is a “balance between cost-effectiveness and convenience”. Features like air conditioning and working windows are demanded in this option.

Uber drivers complain that more people want to use the Uber Go service and they have been affected financially after being downgraded.

Responding to these concerns, Uber spokesperson told private media that the company took this decision on the basis of customer feedback. The company is aiming to make Uber Mini category sizeable. “A few vehicle types have been shifted to [Uber] Mini on the basis of what the riders value most in which product,” the spokesperson was quoted as saying.

The company reportedly has thousands of drivers and cars registered with it.

Last month, Uber bought its rival company Careem for US $3.1 billion.

“We have reached an agreement in which Uber will acquire Careem for $3.1 billion. Careem will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Uber, operating independently with its own brand and services. Careem will retain the name, app, branding and everything you love about us – we’re here for you,” said Careem in a press statement.
