In a bid to reduce the number of accidents and prevent danger to public peace, the Islamabad Capital Territory has completely banned the sale, purchase, and installation of HID lights in vehicles.

According to the details, the District Magistrate Muhammad Hamza Shafqat issued an order regarding the implementation of a ban on High-Intensity Discharge (HID) lights on 19th September 2019. He prohibited the sale, purchase and installation of HID’s in the vehicle within the revenue limits of Islamabad District under Section 144. He further directed the concerned authorities to implement the order with immediate effect. According to the notification, the order shall remain in force for a period of 2 months. However, even after the expiry of this order, the punishment for the violators of this particular order would remain the same and strict legal action will be taken against them. The District Magistrate further emphasized on creating awareness of this notice through different channels including official gazette, the local newspaper, electronic media, and social media. The relevant departments will also be notified about this ban on car HID lights. The official notification is attached below:

HID lights are High-Intensity Discharge lamps and as its name suggests, it illuminates at an extremely high intensity of light thus causing visibility issues for the traffic coming from the opposite direction. It’s a type of electrical gas-discharge lamps which produces light using an electric arc. HID’s are installed in the headlights of the vehicle and largely becoming a major cause of accidents on the roads. The issue was brought under the notice of the District Magistrate who decided to impose a ban on its use. The new rule doesn’t only prohibit the public from using it but also imposes a strict ban on its sellers in the market. The general public often gets it installed in their vehicle as an after-market accessory. Those available in the local market are made of cheap quality material which as a result is not safe to be installed. At any given time, it may result in a short circuit and cause a fire in the vehicle and eventually becoming a threat to the lives of the passengers.

Comparison of HID lights with standard lights

HID light tends to produce more glare as compared to the standard headlights. Since it has a blue light effect, it gets scattered by the water droplets in foggy weather conditions and thus reflects-back to the driver. As a result, the vision of the driver gets blur and could cause an accident. The use of HID lamps is equally dangerous for others traveling on the road as well. The oncoming traffic may experience serious visibility issues due to its high-intensity light and thus losing control over their vehicle. As a responsible citizen, we should realize that its use is a threat to human life, obey the laws which are made for our safety and cooperate with the law enforcement authorities. Let’s hope that it’s strictly implemented in the federal capital.

  1. Hope says

Please ban it in Punjab and KPK also. Suggest to Sindh and Balochistan to do the same. As if people with full headlights at night were not enough that we allowed installation of even worse lights in cars.
