In a bold leap into the EV market, Xiaomi, the world’s second-largest smartphone maker, introduced its first electric car, the Xiaomi SU7, in March 2024. The “SU” in SU7 stands for “Speed Ultra,” an apt name that Xiaomi has recently underscored with a remarkable achievement at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, one of the world’s most challenging racetracks.

Breaking Records at the Nürburgring

The SU7 Ultra prototype recently clocked a stunning lap time of 6:46.874, officially making it the fastest four-door car on this renowned track. However, Xiaomi’s journey to this record wasn’t straightforward. Despite booking track slots for January and October, Xiaomi Auto faced ongoing hurdles with the unpredictable Nürburgring weather.

Rain caused delays on October 9 and 10, with further attempts on October 17 and 21 thwarted by sudden showers. Finally, on October 24, Nürburgring officials provided Xiaomi a narrow one-hour window, and the prototype completed the record-setting lap on October 28.

Revealing SU7 Ultra Production Model

Following this triumph, Xiaomi unveiled the SU7 Ultra production model, a high-performance version of the SU7 sedan that targets driving enthusiasts. First introduced by Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun in his July address, the SU7 Ultra marks a new chapter in Xiaomi’s expansion into EVs, blending power and cutting-edge technology for an extraordinary driving experience.

Models, Pricing & Performance

The original SU7, launched on March 28, is available in three versions—Standard, Pro, and Max—with prices ranging from RMB 215,900 ($30,200 USD) to RMB 299,900 ($42,000 USD).

The SU7 Ultra production model, expected in early 2025, is anticipated to be priced around RMB 800,000 ($112,000 USD) and will house Xiaomi’s robust V8s motor.

With a peak output of 1,138 kW (1,526 hp), the SU7 Ultra accelerates from 0-100 km/h in a mere 1.97 seconds, reaching 200 km/h in under six seconds, and boasts a top speed of over 350 km/h. David Pittard, the 2023 Nürburgring 24 Hours winner, handled the record-breaking lap.

While the lap time belongs to the prototype, the production SU7 Ultra will retain its core features, promising an electrifying entry for Xiaomi in the high-performance EV market.
