Audi, the German luxury car manufacturer, has announced a change in its vehicle naming convention. This new naming system aims to simplify the car models’ naming while highlighting the car’s power output based on whether it is an internal combustion engine or an electric vehicle.

In the past, Audi’s naming system was based on a combination of letters and numbers that represented the car’s engine displacement, performance, and fuel type. However, the new naming system focuses on the car’s power output and is consistent across all models.

According to Audi CEO Markus Duesmann, who announced during the firm’s presentation of its 2022 financial results, the brand will utilize even-numbered model designations for its electric vehicles and odd-numbered model designations for its internal combustion engine-powered vehicles.

For example, the A3, A5, and A7 nameplates will be used for vehicles with internal combustion engines, while the A4, A6, and A8 will be the designations for upcoming EV versions. According to Duesmann, with the renaming of the model formerly known as the Audi e-tron, the shift to this naming standard has already started with the introduction of the Q8 e-tron name.

Audi’s decision to change its naming convention is a bold move, but it highlights the company’s commitment to innovation and adapting to the changing times. The new naming convention will make it easier for customers to understand the power output of each car model and aligns with the company’s push towards electric vehicles.

As Audi continues to expand its electric vehicle lineup, this new naming system will help the company maintain consistency across its entire product line, regardless of the power source. The change will undoubtedly take some time for customers to get used to, but in the long run, it will simplify the buying process and make it easier for customers to find the perfect Audi vehicle to fit their needs.
