A brief history of Tires

Auto enthusiasts know a lot about vehicles’ components their usability and how they evolved from the day they were manufactured till now. They also know how to maintain them properly. However, auto enthusiasts know decidedly less how one of the essential parts of any vehicle “Tire” evolved and how to manage them properly. We have talked in many articles how one can maintain tire and expand its life expectancy. So in this article, we will only tell you how tire evolved.

What is tire?

Before, going for the history of anything, one should always know its definition, so here is the definition of the tire. It is a ring (perfect-circle) shaped component that engulfs a wheel’s rim.

The first tires as we know was wooden tire, at that time it was used in carts to pull them. And the people who made wooden tires were known as the wheelwright.

Moving onward, from a historical perspective the first patent for pneumatic tires air-filled tire appeared in 1847 by Robert William Thomson, however, the tires never went to the production process. The first man who made the pneumatic tire was John Boyd Dunlop in May 1888.  In 1892 the patent of Dunlop declared invalid because the one who first filed a patent for pneumatic tire was Robert. However, he was credited for the importance of rubber tires. The initiative which Dunlop started today in the world is known as Dunlop Tires. From the day the tire was born till now a lot of changes has been made, at first it was made from wood then comes pneumatic tires and then steel-belted radial tires and then more advanced pneumatic tires. Today in the world almost 1 billion tires are being produced on a yearly basis.

Currently, different kinds of tires are being made in the world such as tubeless tires, winter tires, summer tires and Energy-saving tires, etc. Tires consist of different components such as treads, sipes, beads, and ply, etc.
