Don’t Mount THESE iPhones On Your Bikes

0 1,361

Ever heard of a cell phone mount? It’s an accessory used to hold the phone while travelling. Cell phone mounts are very popular among bike riders. The bikers attach the mount to the motorcycle handle bar to keep it secure during the ride. Well, if you have certain generation/model of iPhone and you mount them on your bike, Apple has a warning for you.

The Problem

As per the company, these phones use a sophisticated camera systems like Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and closed-loop autofocus (AF) to take great quality pictures. OIS uses gyroscopic sensors that help take sharp and clear photos even if you accidently move or shake. The closed-loop AF uses magnetic sensors that measure gravity and vibrations and determine the lens position to compensate for any distortions.

According to Apple, these are well crafted and durable pre-systems. However, prolonged high amplitude vibrations can damage OIS and closed-loop AF. Such vibrations are very common in motorcycles. So, if you mount the iPhone on the handle bar, the vibrations will be transmitted and received by the phone, degrading the performance.

You can check your phone specifications to see whether your iPhone uses OIS or AF or not.

The (Not So Helpful) Solution

Apple recommends to use vibration dampening mounts. but those also don’t completely eliminate the vibrations. So, if you mount your iPhones with OIS or closed-loop AF on your bike or in your car, try not to. Look for something else to keep your phone camera system working perfectly.

As always, stay safe on the road, drive responsibly, and enjoy every ride. Good day!
