Did you hear? Toyota’s traditional sedan is being rebadged as a sportback crossover. Toyota decided to discontinue the iconic Crown sedan in November 2020. Later, the company revealed its plan to bring back the Crown nameplate with a twist.

Toyota applied for the new Crown’s patent images in Japan’s trademark bureau, and guess what? The images got leaked on different Japanese auto portals. Here’s the first look at the upcoming Toyota Crown 2023.

Toyota Crown 2023

From blurry leaked patent images, the upcoming Crown looks more like a fastback sedan than a crossover. Nothing is confirmed by Toyota, but the Japanese media reports are positive that the car is coming soon with the name ‘Crown Cross.’ (You know, like Corolla’s crossover version is called the Corolla Cross).

Toyota Crown 2023 is built around the company’s TNGA-K platform. As per Japanese media, the car will initially have two powertrains, a 2.5-litre hybrid engine paired with CVT, and a 2.4-litre turbo engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The all-electric variant will join the lineup later on.

Official Launch

Media reports suggest that Toyota will launch the new Crown crossover in China, Japan, and North America. The sales of hybrid variants will begin in 2023, and the electric variant will come out in 2024.

Toyota launched the first generation of Crown in 1955 as a premium passenger sedan in Japan. Three years later, it became Toyota’s first car export to the US and European markets. Though the car couldn’t make a run in the international waters and disappeared from the US and Europe, the Crown remained a Japanese best-seller for years.

With time the car’s sales declined in Japan, and the company had to discontinue the model. After everything that went wrong, the Crown is still an important nameplate for the Toyota brand. That’s why the Crown is back with a new personality.

Toyota Crown did not strike with European or American customers tastes because they were used to driving larger sized and bigger engine cars, next to those cars Toyota Crown seemed like a small car and on top of that it was too stately looking that is why Toyota launched Lexus instead. Anyways, that is how a crossover should look like, Sportage’s shape has done nothing but misguide people into believing that it is a S.U.V. or a 4*4.
