In a first, Karachi Traffic Police have appointed two women as riders in the metropolitan city. These officers have been appointed to keep an eye on traffic violations. Samavia and Razia are the officers who has opened the door of women empowerment in Karachi traffic police.

According to police, both received special training before their appointment on patrolling bikes. The police have appointed Razia in District East of Karachi, while Samavia is performing her duties in District South of the city. In a country where men dominate police force, it indeed is a great move.

Origin of Idea:

In 2020, Deputy Superintendent Police Nadeem Ahmad presented the idea of police officers using motorcycles, as it is a more convenient mode of transport. During his UN deputation in Indonesia, Ahmad thought Pakistani women should also be self-reliant like women in Indonesia. The DSP also suggested that police should make motorcycle riding a mandatory part of training.

After returning to Pakistan, Ahmad decided to implement his plan after realizing that most policewomen are facing transportation issues. Hence, the police decided to convince and motivate women officers for motorbike ride training. Although the women officers met a lot of troubles, even got injured during the training; however, they continued it.

IG Karachi on Women Empowerment:

After the appointment, Chief of Karachi police, Additional Inspector General (IG) Ghulam Nabi Memon, congratulated two women. He said this step has been taken in line with the Karachi police’s women empowerment policy.

This surely is a great initiative by Karachi police, as it will encourage other women to be self-reliant, increase their safety on the roads and make a strong presence in the police force.
