PakWheels Automobile Industry Survey Report 2018 has revealed that the ‘Big Three’ of Pakistan’s auto industry – Suzuki, Honda and Toyota – have dominated the car market for yet another year.

According to the findings, other automakers only share 9% of Pakistan’s car market. Toyota IMC has stood first with 35% market share while Pak Suzuki and Honda Atlas Cars maintain 29% and 27% dominance, respectively.

It has been further found that Toyota Corolla remained the biggest winner with its 20% market share. After Toyota Corolla, Honda City and Honda Civic were found to have 12% and 11% market share.

Pak Suzuki cars were also ranked in top 10. According to the survey report, Suzuki Cultus has 8% market share while now discontinued Suzuki Mehran maintained a figure of 7%. Suzuki Wagon R (4%) and Suzuki Swift (2%) also remained popular cars during the previous year.

In terms of the local auto industry, Toyota dominated with 35% market share. It is followed by Pak Suzuki at 28% and Honda at 27%. Other local automakers just received a share of 11%.

Honda Civic has been voted as the most prestigious Car of the Year, as per the survey report of 2018. Toyota Fortuner has been voted as the SUV of the Year.

Most of the Best Car awards were also shared by the Big Three Automakers. Following are some of the winners of Best Car awards in the respective category as voted by people:

Performance: Honda Civic (local) and Toyota Aqua (imported)

Safety: Honda Civic (local) and Toyota Land Cruiser (imported)

Comfort: Honda Civic (local) and Honda Accord (imported)

Value for Money: Honda City (local) and Toyota Land Cruiser (imported)

Fuel Efficiency: Suzuki Wagon R (local) and Toyota Aqua (imported)

Resale: Toyota Corolla (local) and Toyota Land Cruiser (imported)

It is no secret that Toyota, Suzuki and Honda maintain dominance in Pakistan’s auto industry. The three local carmakers sell the greatest number of new cars in the country every year. It can be argued that the ‘Big Three’ local carmakers do not face much competition and have clearly defined market areas.

It merits a mention that several new automakers have availed Greenfield and Brownfield statuses in Pakistan in accordance with Automotive Development Policy 2016-21. The incoming new entrants in local auto manufacturing may give tough competition to the Big Three.
