Audi Gearing Up To Make Synthetic Diesel

0 110

Audi has teamed up with Ineratec GmbH and Energiedienst Holding AG to produce synthetic diesel from renewable energy. While most major car manufacturers are thinking or have shifted to electric batteries or hydro fuel cell (Under Development). Audi is thinking a little out of the box and wants to hold on to internal combustion engine for a little longer than you might expect.

Audi states that they could bring combustion-engine cars to near carbon neutral status. Which is actually a very big achievement. Meaning that cars might just release 5-10gram/km of CO2 which is very friendly for the environment. Audi also claims that shifting to this energy is also a lot easier than shifting to other energy sources.

To obtain synthetic diesel hydropower is converted into synthetic fuel by means of electrolysis, hydrogen extraction and then combining the hydrogen with carbon dioxide that would otherwise contribute to global warming. This gives wee beasties called long-chain hydrocarbons. Which can be divided into e-diesel and waxes.

Audi already has a plant in Dresden that is exploring the same idea using different technologies and a different partner known as Sunfire. It also produces gas – synthetic methane – for the A3, A4, and A5 e-Tron.
