Car sales decline by 14% for the second month in a row

In June 2018, for the second time in a row, the auto sector in Pakistan shows a downward sales trend with a 14% decline in passenger cars cumulatively, on a month-on-month basis.

The total no. of passenger cars sold in June 2018 has gone down to 15,652 from 18,223 units sold in May 2018.

The sales trend of 4×4 and 4×2 have seen an increase of 8% with 1099 units sold month-on-month basis. However, Fortuner’s sale declined by 18%, but cumulatively the Jeep segment’s sales have gone up. In May 2018, the total units of Toyota Fortuner and Honda BR-V sold were 1010. Also, the trend of SUVs and Crossovers estimated by PakWheels.com was more as compared to the passenger cars in June. On top of it, the election season in Pakistan has led to the continuous rise in sales of Hilux.

The rising dollar against the Pakistani rupee, the continuous price hike and the government’s decision to bare non-filers from buying vehicles are the main reasons for this major drop in car sales in June 2018.

We contacted the officials from our local auto manufacturing companies and according to them the decision of restricting non-filers from buying cars is the main reason for declining sales.

As mentioned above, this is the second month that the passenger cars show a decline on a month-on-month basis. However, if we compare the stats on a year-on-year basis, the sales have gone up by 21% to 15,652 cars sold in June 2018, from 12,870 cars sold in the same month the previous year. And this year-on-year basis increase can be due to the low financing rates and the high demand of Careem and Uber in the country.

With 2941 units sold in June 2018, Honda Civic and City sales have gone down by 21% from 3750 units sold in May 2018. The total sales of Toyota Corolla fell by 24% with 3546 units sold in June 2018 and in the same year, last month, the total units of Corolla sold were 4676.

In 1000cc cars, Suzuki faced a decline of 3% on a month-on-month basis. The total units of Cultus sold in June 2018 were 1362, and in May 2018, the total units sold were 1412. The total units of Wagon R, on the other hand, sold were 2680 in June 2018.

In 800cc, the sales of Suzuki Mehran, the most loved car, declined by 9% to 3214 units in June 2018. In May 2018, the total units of Mehran sold were 3557. However, as per the news, Pak Suzuki will soon be discontinuing the VX variant of Mehran nationwide.

Moreover, the sales of farm tractors have gone up by 29% from FY 17 to Fy 18.

Coming towards the bike segment, there is a total increase of 26% in the sales of bikes on a year-on-year basis. From 102,207 bikes sold last year in June, the sales have gone up to 128,976 units sold this year in June.

Atlas Honda shows a great percentage increase with 28% and 91,507 units sold this June 2018. The total bikes of Suzuki and Yamaha sold were 2067 and 1978, with an increase of 17% and 90% on year-on-year basis, respectively. United Autos have sold 33,424 units this year in June with a 19% increase in sales.
