In a great news for local consumers, the Pakistan government has decided to improve the quality of petrol and diesel. According to the Federal Minister of Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam, the quality of fuel will be shifted from Euro2 to Euro5.

A New Era:

“Pakistan will enter into a new era of clean fuel,” the minister said, adding that this will help in the fight against smog. Amin further said that this new policy would be applicable from August 1, 2020, on all imports, However, he mentioned that petrol will be shifted to Euro5 from August 1, while the standard of diesel will be shifted from January 1, 2021.

The government took this decision during a federal cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The climate minister also said the premier had promised to increase the quality of fuel, and it has been fulfilled. Talking to the media, Amin said Pakistan imports 70percent of petrol and 40percent of diesel. He further said that Pakistan will be the first country to shift the fuel quality directly from Euro2 to Euro5. “Other countries have made the shift in small and gradual steps,” he stated.

The minister further said that only Euro5 petrol would be available in smog-hit areas in the future.

PSO and import of Euro5:

Earlier this month, PakWheels reported that Pakistan State Oil (PSO) has already started importing Euro5 petrol. The reports stated that Kuwait Petroleum Corporation will be the leading supplier of this upgraded fuel to Pakistan. Furthermore, PSO has also directed Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to start importing Euro5 petrol. The OMCs have to comply with this order by the end of 2020 for petrol and the start of 2021 for diesel.

Issues With Low Quality Fuel:

For years, the low-quality fuel has not only caused pollution but also different issues in cars and motorbikes in Pakistan. The diesel engines in the country have been most affected due to low quality fuel. Modern diesel engines are made in compliance with Euro3, Euro4 and Euro5 fuel and these engines do not work properly without this upgraded fuel. This is the reason why, diesel engine vehicles including imported cars never performed well in Pakistan.

Moreover, low quality fuel in Pakistan has choked countless catalytic converters in cars. You can check the PakWheels auto store to buy new converters.

After usage of Euro5-grade petrol and diesel, these issues are expected to resolve to a great extent.
