Saudi Arabia to Let Women Drive Cars

Saudi Arabia, known for its controversial laws and regulations against women, in an impressive move has allowed Saudi women to drive cars in the country.

Country’s supreme leader and monarch King Salman ordered this new reform in a royal decree delivered yesterday on 26th of September. According to the state’s local news agency, it is instructed in the royal decree that a ministerial body would be formed, which will give its advice in 30 days and would implement the royal order by 24th June 2018.

The new royal order has allowed Saudi women to acquire drivers’ licenses and drive cars without the permission of a legal guardian. Moreover, the majority of religious scholars have also approved this royal decree.

Saudi ambassador to Washington DC, Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz while expressing his views to the media on this current reform said,

“I think our leadership understands our society is ready.”

The recent development is a huge milestone in country’s history as Saudi Arabia was the only country in the whole world where women were not allowed to drive cars. And due to these extreme laws against the women, the country is being harshly criticized by human right commissions.

This new announcement by the King is received globally as a good omen for the Saudi women. US state dept even said that this is a great step in the right direction.
